DAVID TENNANT as THE DOCTOR in DOCTOR WHO
DAVID TENNANT | The Doctor (10th)

David Tennant has taken on one of television's most prized roles, the Doctor in DOCTOR WHO.

He follows in the footsteps of William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann and the acclaimed, Christopher Eccelston as the space-time travelling Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey.

His appointment to take the helm of the TARDIS was confirmed on 16 April 2005.

The 34-year-old has starred in CASANOVA, BLACKPOOL, and HE KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.

David Tennant is a respected classical actor who has performed numerous starring roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company, including Touchstone in AS YOU LIKE IT, Romeo in ROMEO AND JULIET, Antipholus of Syracuse in THE COMEDY OF ERRORS and Captain Jack Absolute in THE RIVALS.

He was nominated for a 2003 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actor of 2002 for his performance in LOBBY HERO performed at the Donmar Warehouse and the New Ambassador's Theatres.

Born (birth name is David MacDonald) on 18 April 1971, Bathgate, West Lothian (Scotland) to an Anglican Minister. David studied acting at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Height (if you wanted to know) - 6' 1" (1.85 m).

What has Tennant said about acting ambitions?

"I was very small, about 3 or 4 I think, and just wanted to be the people on telly telling these wonderful stories. Obviously the idea grew and matured with me but I can't ever remember wanting to do anything else. I've just sort of taken it for granted all my life that that was what I would do."

On filming DOCTOR WHO:

"The series is so huge. I'm aware of all that but I try to keep it in my back pocket and just get on with the job. It's great - you get to play a Time Lord and have a TARDIS. You can't knock that."

On succeeding Christopher Eccleston:

"Chris was so good in it. It left me thinking 'there's an awful lot to live up to here'. I know everyone loved Chris, and so did I, but hopefully I won't disappoint people."

On Billie Piper:

"She's just great. Fantastic. Just absolutely perfect. Spunky and quick and sexy, just the ideal companion really. So I'm really glad she is doing the whole series."

On DOCTOR WHO fan online reaction:

"The first comment I read was very nice, and the next comment was terribly flattering, and then the next one said something like 'I can't bear the sight of him!'"

"The one after that said 'That's it! The dream is finished! Somebody who looks like a weasel could never play the Doctor!'"

"I just hope people like it. I hope they stick with it and give it a chance."
