BBC PROMS - DOCTOR WHO - MUSIC OF THE SPHERES

27 JULY 2008 | EVENT | WHO PROM as it happens

This morning, THE PROMS protocols were exterminated by a capacity audience (6,000) at the Royal Albert Hall as it erupted mid-music as a range of aliens and monsters invaded. For all non-Prommers, the audience is usually very very very quiet whilst music is played.

The monsters included a new Cyberman variant - a Cyberman minus head, displaying a "bloated" humanoid beneath.

The concert is being recorded for TV broadcast later this year, and for DVD release.

EXTERNAL LINK BBC RADIO 3 website

The exclusive "scene" (Directed by Euros Lyn - 7:11 duration - and only available to UK viewers via the BBC WHO website during the interval so it seems) is called MUSIC OF THE SPHERES (written by Russell T Davies) starring David Tennant - and the "Graske" played by Jimmy Vee but voiced by Philip Hurd-Wood - as the Tenth Doctor as he explains the Gravity Patterns of the universe.

In the TARDIS, he finds a "hole" to the Royal Albert Hall. He was first there in 1895 at which he played the Tuba. He sends his newly composed music - "Ode To The Universe" - via the "hole" and then conducts the orchestra. The Graske then slips through the hole to the Royal Albert Hall with the Doctor's Water pistol. The Doctor then "reverses the flow of the neutron flow" to send the Graske back into his own galaxy.

12:25 (BST) - Introduced by Noel Clarke and Camille Coudri. In the second part of the concert, Julian Bleach appeared as Davros - welcoming "prommers" to his new Dalek Empire and Davros' Palace - alongside Nicholas Briggs as the Dalek voices.

12:33 (BST) - Catherine Tate appears on stage and apologies for her hang-over, to celebrate the "Super Temp from Chiswick".

12:39 (BST) - Freema Agyeman confirms that David Tennant is listening on BBC 3. Who isn't?

13:04 (BST) - Concludes with a pitiful "pub-singer" rendition of SONG FOR TEN. Oh, dear - can daleks actually exterminate this singer. Well, when I say "singer"..! But the theme music is iconic enough to wipe away this dreadful song performance.

13:12 (BST) - A triumphant end. MUSIC OF THE SPHERES episode/cutaway has now been removed from the official BBC site.

26 JULY 2008 | MERCHANDISE | CHARACTER OPTIONS new but price hiked

CHARACTER OPTIONS are feeling the "credit crunch" too (and especially after a poor Christmas 2007 period due to low than expected sales - and this year's "Dalek Voice Changer" will be ludicrously heading toward the bargain bin by October) and have increased the cost (by 13% for single pack items) of their DOCTOR WHO action figures - now RRP £7.99.

Additionally, the new range includes the (television unimpressive) Pyroviles creature and (bizarre inclusion of an) Roman soldier as a FIRES OF POMPEII PACK (RRP £14.99), and two version of the Supreme Dalek (12" and 5" remote controlled - RRP £39.99 and £17.99 respectively).

However, the quality of "plastic" has improved when compared to the action figures of the Master, Yana, Lazlo and the Pig Slave.

11 JULY 2008 | 2009 SPECIALS | Who's writing what and when

The DAILY MAIL has interviewed BBC WALES Julie Gardner confirming that due to financial cutbacks (affecting all of the BBC) - even though there is funding from CANADA BROADCASTING TV - there will be only three sixty-minute specials in 2009.

These will be broadcast at Easter, at Christmas and at an unspecified date (expected though to be 31 October). Russell T Davies will be writing one of these and co-writing the remaining two with an unnamed writer.

Quote: "Aside from Series Five, which will have a full 13 episodes and transmit in 2010, we are making four one-hour specials. The first, which we've already filmed, will go out this Christmas. The next will go out the following Easter. The other specials have yet to be scheduled, although one will definitely be on at Christmas 2009."

Even though Tenannt has told the BBC of his decision as regards moving on from DOCTOR WHO, it seems that he has not spoken to Julie Gardner. Out in in the cold, or too much of a blabber-mouth to be trusted?

Quote: "I can confirm that David Tennant will be coming back after his run playing Hamlet [for the RSC] to film the four specials. Beyond that I don't know. What I do know is that David still loves Doctor Who, does great work on the show and is very happy doing it."

SERIES 5 has be confirmed to have 13 episodes and broadcast in 2010.

BBC SOURCES have hinted to eyeofhorus.org.uk that one of the "specials" has an Egyptian theme.

10 JULY 2008 | PERSONALITY | BBC2 premieres TENNANT drama

BBC PRESS OFFICE has released further details of EINSTEIN AND EDDINGTON ( by Peter Moffat) starring David Tennant (with Andy Serkis and Jim Broadbent) as part of BBC2's highlights.

David Tennant and Andy Serkis star in EINSTEIN AND EDDINGTON by Peter Moffat (Criminal Justice, Hawking) about two extraordinary men striving for truth amid the chaos of the First World War. Albert Einstein (Serkis) spent years working on his General Theory of Relativity, which threatened to overturn two centuries of Newtonian certainty. Arthur Eddington (Tennant) was a prominent British astrophysicist who, as a Quaker, believed that 'truth knows no boundaries' and bravely championed Einstein's theories while Britain rejected anything German.

7 JULY 2008 | PERSONALITY | RTD: nearly AFTER WHO

Russell T Davies has been interviewed by THE GUARDIAN ahead of his masterclass at the MediaGuardian Edinburgh International Television Festival next month.

Quote: "As well as dreading the prospect of a Tory government, Davies is mulling over two drama ideas for "grown-ups", one of which will be about gay men in their 40s. The BBC will have first refusal. This Christmas, however, is "f*****d" because he will still be hard at work on the four specials that begin filming in January once Tennant finishes his RSC run as Hamlet."

And: "But Davies refuses to say whether Tennant will return when the full series returns in 2010, except that he has made his decision and that the BBC knows what it is. There's no point asking Davies, therefore..."
