Busy time
for UK journos as the fall-out from the first episode of SERIES 2 starts.
A
balanced comment on the viewing figures for NEW EARTH by THE GUARDIAN
Former
companion, Elisabeth Sladen criticises 1970s DOCTOR WHO producers
for cardboard cut-out companions.
"...Compared
with Eccleston, Tennant is pretty but vacant...only Tennant's accent and schoolboyish
acting can spoil it..." is the review by THE
MIRROR's main TV reviewer.
THE
TIMES has a slightly more enthused review "...Poor zombies aside, however, this
was a great bit of cheap, imaginative television with perfect casting..."
THE
TELEGRAPH focuses on the cash injection that Wales has enjoyed since DOCTOR
WHO began filming in the principality.
THE
LANCASHIRE TELEGRAPH continues to question the plot structure of the first episode.
Writing on the wall for Russell T Davies?
THE
HERALD comments on the "corridor syndrome" that plagued the first episode.
And THE OBSERVER?
Knock knock.
Who's there?
Doctor
Is a bell strictly necessary on a bicycle?
Geddit? No, and that's the way I feel, I'm afraid, about Dr Who .
There seems to have been an unbroken fanfare surrounding the show ever since
its return in its Russell T Davies guise. But it strikes me that it's too old
for kids and too young for adults. Which probably means it's perfect for overgrown
kids and, to be sure, there is no shortage of those.
As the new Doctor, David Tennant wore a frozen smile of false confidence,
like a vertigo-sufferer who gets the girl of his dreams only to find that she
wants to go on a rollercoaster on their first date. Tennant is a good actor and
no doubt he'll settle into all the special effects, made-up aliens and frantic
movement. Though whether he should is another matter. It's all very well acting
like he's in the 'Year 5 billion and 23' but not if it ruins his future.
Overall, the Jury is "out" on Tennant.
And
the SUNDAY MAIL has a different comment. Tennant's girlfriend
(and DOCTOR
WHO guest star, Sophia Myles) reveals her real "toy-boy".
THE
TIMES comments on the 8.3 million UK viewers who tuned in to DOCTOR
WHO, making
it the top programme to be watched on Saturday.
