PLOTLINE
Mickey is startled to find a statue of Rose in
a museum - a statue that is 2,000 years old. The Doctor realises that this means
the TARDIS will shortly take them to Ancient Rome, but when it does, he and Rose
soon have more on their minds than sculpture.
While the Doctor searches for a missing boy, Rose
befriends a girl who claims to know the future - a girl whose predictions are
surprisingly accurate. But then the Doctor stumbles on the hideous truth behind
the statue of Rose - and Rose herself learns that you have to be very careful
what you wish for.
COMMENT
Jacqueline Rayner's THE STONE ROSE is not only a perfect
story for young viewers to be introduced to DOCTOR WHO audiobooks with but for
David Tennant to demonstrate his considerable talents with.
Tennant is a one-man repertory company who effortlessly migrates disparate
characters whether a single-mother from a South London Council Estate, to an
aged citizen of the Roman Empire, or even an all-encompassing Goddess.
And, as it is DOCTOR WHO, there is no where

As it is DOCTOR WHO, the ordinary & humdrum
is jostled by the extraordinary to deliver a fantastical story of time travel
and love & loss. And where
else can you hear about Roman pigeon 'pooh, supermodel Kate Moss and Interflora
mentioned alongside a philosophical rationalisation of a time paradox.
A creative storytelling maze with the reassuring Doctor and Rose guiding us
through, asking the questions we want to ask and offering a reassuring hand as
danger looms.
On a family outing to the British museum, Mickey Smith discovers a statue
of Rose, even down the earrings. Travelling in the TARDIS to Rome AD120, the
mystery takes a twist of fate when they stumble across an attempted mugging.
As the threads unravel, the time travellers meet a father in search of his
son, a surly sculptor who hides a dark and unspeakable secret, and a girl who
knows the future. Only the Doctor is capable of tying them together at a break-neck
and dazzling pace.
THE STONE ROSE is an archetypal
DOCTOR WHO story with a tour-de-force performance
from David Tennant, and one that the incomparable children's storyteller, Kenneth
Williams, would applaud.
