01 DECEMBER 2007 | AUDIOBOOKS | DOCTOR WHO CLASSIC

With thanks to BBC AUDIOBOOKS.

Following the success of the recently released unabridged audiobooks of DOCTOR WHO AND THE GIANT ROBOT and THE DINOSAUR INVASION, BBC AUDIOBOOKS are releasing two new novel readings and another narrated soundtrack on 5 February 2008.

For the first time on audio, this is an unabridged reading of a classic "Doctor Who" novelisation, based on a serial from the original TV series. Why do so many spaceships crash land on Karn, a bleak, lonely and seemingly deserted planet? Are they doomed by the mysterious powers of the strange, black-robed Sisterhood, jealously guarding their secret of eternal life? Or does the mad Dr Solon, for some evil purpose of his own, need the bodies of the victims - and more especially, the body of Doctor Who...?

For the first time on audio, this is an unabridged reading of a classic "Doctor Who" novelisation, based on a serial from the original TV series. The year is 2540, and two powers loom large in the Galaxy - Earth and Draconia. After years of peace, their spaceships are now being mysteriously attacked and cargoes rifled. Each suspects the other, and full-scale war seems unavoidable. The Doctor, accused of being a Draconian spy, is thrown into prison. And only when the Master appears on the scene do things really begin to move...

And the sequel to THE CURSE OF PELADON, THE MONSTER OF PELADON (1974), starring Jon Pertwee and Elisabeth Sladen, is being released on CD with linking narration from Sladen.

This is released a month later on 3 March 2008.

Following the success of the recently released unabridged audiobooks of DOCTOR WHO AND CAVE MONSTERS and THE DOOMSDAY WEAPON, BBC AUDIOBOOKS are releasing two new novel readings on 5 November 2007 RRP: £17.99 and, at the same time the narrated soundtrack, THE CURSE OF PELADON.

  • DOCTOR WHO AND THE DINOSAUR INVASION - Martin Jarvis reads this thrilling novelisation of a classic Doctor Who adventure

The Doctor walked slowly forward into the cul-de-sac. The giant dinosaur turned its head to focus on the midget now approaching... The Doctor aimed his gun to fire... suddenly from behind came a great roar of anger. He spun round - blocking the exit from the narrow street towered a Tyrannosaurus rex, its savage jaws dripping with blood... The Doctor and Sarah arrive back in the TARDIS to find London completely deserted - except for the dinosaurs. Has the return of these prehistoric creatures been deliberately planned and, if so, who can be behind it all?

  • DOCTOR WHO AND THE GIANT ROBOT - Tom Baker reads this thrilling novelisation of a classic DOCTOR WHO adventure.

'Look, Brigadier! It's growing!' screamed Sarah. The Brigadier stared in amazement as the Robot began to grow... and grow... swelling to the size of a giant! Slowly the metal colossus, casting its enormous shadow upon the surrounding trees and buildings, began to stride towards the Brigadier. A giant metal hand reached down to grasp him...

  • DOCTOR WHO - THE CURSE OF PELADON - Katy Manning narrates Jon Pertwee's Doctor encounter with the Ice Warriors on the planet Peladon.

'May I present Princess Josephine...of TARDIS!' The TARDIS arrives on the storm-lashed planet of Peladon, just as it is being assessed for its suitability to join the Galactic Federation. Mistaken for Federation delegates from Earth, the Doctor and Jo become involved in a series of dramatic events at the conference. King Peladon's Chancellor has died in mysterious circumstances, and his High Priest is vehemently opposed to the Federation's advances. Amongst the other delegates are hermaphrodite hexapod Alpha Centauri,half-automaton Arcturus, and two Ice Warriors - whose species the Doctor known as old adversaries. Confined together in the Citadel, they struggle to counter myth and superstition with logic and reason. Is the Curse of Peladon about to strike those who form a union with the Federation? Has the Royal beast Aggedor risen to defend the planet's independence? And could one of the delegates actually be working to double-cross the others? The Doctor and Jo must work fast to solve these and other questions, and at the same time stay alive...

DOCTOR WHO - WILLIAM HARTNELL DOCTOR WHO - THE GUNFIGHTERS

BBC AUDIOBOOKS have released details of the Hartnell CLASSIC SERIES story, THE GUNFIGHTERS (1966). RRP £13.99, and published on 5 February 2007.

Details of the release:

The TARDIS lands in the Wild West in this classic BBC TV soundtrack starring William Hartnell, with linking narration by Peter Purves. 'So come, you coyotes, and howl at the moon'til there's blood upon the sawdust in The Last Chance Saloon.' It's 1881 and, in the Wild West settlement of Tombstone, there are three strangers in town: 'Doctor Caligari', 'Steven Regret', and 'Miss Dodo Dupont'. They've arrived in a 20th Century blue police box, and they're about to wander into a whole heap of trouble.

The Doctor is in need of a dentist, but the sort of anaesthetic Doc Holliday uses comes out of a liquor bottle. He's in the middle of a feud with the Clanton family, whilst Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson try to keep the peace. This isn't the place for a relaxing holiday, as the TARDIS crew soon discover.

In a bonus interview, Peter Purves, who also narrates this remastered soundtrack, recalls the making of THE GUNFIGHTERS for television.

A special 10-minute bonus music segment is also included comprising the original recordings of Lynda Baron singing Tristram Cary's The Ballad of the Last Chance Saloon. This is the first time the recordings have been published.
